Bologna in Bloom: I love spring season. And you?
The things I love most about this season are: the long days, the brightest light and the warmest air, the clouds that seem meringues, the sudden thunderstorms, the scent of rain and flowers, the buds on the trees, the flowering of the wisteria in Piazza Santo Stefano and that of the Japanese cherry trees in Via Pelagio Palagi and Via degli Orefici.
Bologna celebrates the return of the warm season with many events dedicated to plants, flowers and gardening. I’m going to share with you all my favorite events and for this reason I called this blogpost Bologna in Bloom.
Among them, 4 are the appointments expected by bolognesi (Bologna people).
I would like to point out one in particular: it is known but discreetly, elegant but accessible, has all the shades of color of the wonderful peonies. Finally, it takes place in a location that is usually not accessible to the public. And this event is a great and unique opportunity to visit it.
Spring Events: Bologna in Bloom
Peonia in Bloom (Peony in Bloom)
I’ve already written before all the reasons why you should take note of this appointment.
In a secret garden, for just one weekend a year, you’ll find peonies, flower workshops and excellent handicrafts. Gem among the gems: the possibility to visit an exclusive place in Bologna, normally closed to the public, like the ancient gardens of Via della Braina, already part of the complex Pio Istituto Povere Sordomute in Bologna.

Yes, because Bologna has a green heart hidden among its beautiful historical buildings. And if you ever decide to go up to the Asinelli Tower, you will be amazed by the green spots that are visible even from above.

Bologna in spring means a walk to the Margherita gardens.
If you want to spend a day in the open air or visit a new Bologna, choose the largest public park in the city, opened in 1879.
For years it has hosted Giardini&Terrazze, an event dedicated to greenery and outdoor living. More than 250 exhibitors are expected, including producers and traders of plants and flowers, furniture and accessories for the home and garden, clothing, artistic crafts, vintage, wellness, pet and typical Italian products.
If you have never visited Serre dei Giardini Margherita, take the opportunity to see the garden and stop here for a break. The old greenhouse has become a place where is possible to have breakfast, lunch, aperitivo or dinner. I wrote about it in a blogpost dedicated to the aperitif in the garden, if you want to read it, you can find it HERE.
When: 10, 11, 12 May
Hours: from 9 a.m.
Where: Bologna, Parco dei Giardini Margherita
Facebook Page: Giardini e Terrazzi

Bologna In Fiore (Bologna in Bloom)
In the setting of Piazza Minghetti, you can admire and buy plants and flowers of all kinds for indoor and outdoor: climbing, aromatic, Sicilian citrus. An explosion of scents and colors that invades the historic center of the city for an entire weekend.
And if you decide to shop, there is a free courtesy service reserved for those who buy plants or flowers.
When: 12, 13, 14 April
Hours: from the morning
Where: Bologna, Piazza Minghetti

Among my favorite gardening readings, there’s a book of Vita Sackville-West, The Garden Picture Book. And if you don’t know her, an amazing and incredible woman, and her book, but you love flowers and gardens, I suggest you to read it.
I have collected in a TAG, that I have called as the city where I live, all the posts that I have written and that concern it. You can find them here, click on BOLOGNA
